James Madison University canceled the final games of its 2022 softball season following the death of catcher Lauren Bernett, the school announced Monday. Bernett's death was announced on April 26.

"This was an extremely difficult decision and one that was not made lightly," JMU head coach Loren LaPorte said in a release. "We are so grateful for the support of our fans all season and for the love from the softball community during the past week. We will use this time to continue healing and to honor Lauren's memory while finishing the academic semester strong.

"Most importantly, we're thinking about our graduating seniors whose careers have come to an abrupt conclusion. We will make sure that they are honored for the commitment and dedication they have made as student-athletes at James Madison University."

JMU, which made a surprise run to the 2021 College World Series, had already called off five games last week. The program had four regular-season games remaining this year against Virginia and Elon. The Dukes end the season at 21-21 (10-5 in conference play), finishing the year on a five-game win streak.

Bernett, 20, hit .336 with 36 hits and nine home runs in 2022 and had been named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week on April 25 following a strong weekend series.
